Future Harry Potter Books

Although J.K Rowling has said in the past that Harry Potter was and would remain only seven novels, she has adopted a newer, ambivalent position in which an eighth Potter book is not off the table. Several times since the publication of the seventh Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Rowling has left open the possibility. She has, however, stressed that if such a novel were to be written and published, it would not happen for at least a decade.

In the meantime, she has written and published some additional works since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

The Tales of Beetle the Bard

Published: December 2008

Overview
Following the publication of the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in July 2007, J.K. Rowling announced later that year that she would donate seven signed copies of a book of children's fairy tales, The Tales of Beetle the Bard to The Children's Voice charity campaign. The book was published for the general public in December 2008.

Rowling wrote the book sometime prior to 2007, and originally referenced it within the seventh Harry Potter novel - Albus Dumbledore left the book to Hermione Granger in his will. One of the book's stories, titled The Tale of the Three Brothers, was the basis of a major plot within Deathly Hallows.

Prequel

Published: June 2008

Overview
J.K. Rowling published a short, 800-word prequel to the Harry Potter series in June 2008. According to the author, the passage was set approximately three years prior to the birth of Harry Potter. It was written on a story card for both English PEN, a writers' association, and Dyslexia Action, a charity. Auctioned at Waterstone's in London, all proceeds went to charity.

It focuses on a particular adventure experienced by James Potter and Sirius Black, in which the two young men are racing on a motorbike and are cornered at a dead end by a pair of policemen. A group of Death Eaters approaches the alley, and the two men draw their wands to cast a spell which crashes the police vehicle into the Death Eaters. The two policemen are shocked, and the two wizards escape.
